Dorian Hardy
Dorian Hardy’s story is one of service, curiosity, and a deep commitment to community. Born in Manhattan, New York, and raised in Saddle River, New Jersey, she developed an early sense of adventure that would guide her through a remarkable life journey. In 1980, Dorian enlisted in the United States Air Force, where she proudly served for eight years. Her military career began at McConnell Air Force Base in Kansas and continued at Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach, Florida - experiences that shaped her discipline, resilience, and lifelong dedication to service. Following her time in uniform, Dorian continued her work with the Department of Defense as a civilian, traveling extensively and embracing new cultures around the world. She spent three years in Sicily, Italy, and another three in Crete, Greece, before returning stateside to Cape Canaveral Air Station. There, she worked in the Mission Control Center focusing on public relations and outreach, helping connect people to the exciting work happening in aerospace and defense. After retiring from federal service, Dorian made her home in Venice, Florida, where she began a second career with Sarasota County Government in Parks and Recreation. Over 27 years, she became a cornerstone of the department, contributing under every director since its inception—Walt Rothenbeck, John McCarthy, Carolyn Brown, and Nicole Risler. Her institutional knowledge, steady leadership, and passion for public service made her an invaluable part of the team. Dorian has also long been devoted to preserving local history. Through her work alongside the Venice Area Historical Society, she has played a key role in expanding programs, supporting exhibits, and enriching community engagement. Notably, she helped lead the grand opening of the historic train depot in 2002 following its restoration - an achievement that reflects her dedication to honoring the past while building for the future. Now retired from Sarasota County Government, Dorian looks forward to dedicating even more time to the Venice Area Historical Society, helping to grow its mission, expand its reach, and ensure that the rich history of the community continues to be shared for generations to come. |
